The Influence of Nursing Home Culture on Recruiting and Retaining Nursing Staff - Risk Management Webinar

Post pandemic, recruiting and retaining nursing home staff has become more difficult than ever. While there is much that we cannot control, this webinar aims to look at factors that can be influenced. The relationship between adequate and appropriate staffing and the quality of care will be briefly described as will the tools to determine whether the staffing provided is sufficient for residents’ needs. Identifying factors that influence recruitment and retention and ways to improve staff stability will be discussed.

• Discuss ways to build a culture that leads to an adequate, appropriate and stable nursing staff

Speaker: Elizabeth Halifax, PhD, RN

With a career focused on health care for older adults, Elizabeth Halifax qualified as a registered nurse (RN) and has been continuously licensed in the UK from 1986 and from 1991 in the state of California. In addition to a BA in Economic and Social History and a postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies, she earned her PhD in Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2013.

Currently, Dr. Halifax is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences at UCSF. She has held leadership positions in long term care hospital administration in the UK and in nursing homes in the USA. Dr. Halifax has specialized in research in nursing home care. Her teaching experience includes teaching graduate and pre-licensure nursing students at UCSF and California State University and nursing home staff and as a training consultant. Dr. Halifax is engaged as a legal expert witness on cases related to nursing home care. She is a member of the Geriatric Circle for California’s Departments of Aging, Public Health and Social Services advising on issues related to Covid-19 and long-term care.

Dr. Halifax’s board experience includes serving with the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, an organization that provides national education, advocacy, and policy analysis for long-term care residents. She has experience as a volunteer ombudsman visiting with and advocating for long term care residents.
