DESCRIPTION
Improper manual handling of residents is a well-known, persistent, and problematic practice in aging services. It can cause injury to both the resident and worker, leading to costly consequences for organizations. This Member webinar will discuss the risks associated with resident handling and movement and the key elements to implementing a successful safe patient handling and movement (SPHM) program. Safe handling techniques and equipment will be explored and recommendations for assessing equipment needs will be provided.

OBJECTIVES

  • Review risks and costs of injury from resident handling and movement and strategies to mitigate risks
  • Recognize key elements of a SPHM program that can reduce injury risk for residents and staff
  • Examine SPHM equipment and assess needs based on resident populations
